Three Repairs That Will Ready Your Home for Winter

Posted on by Heating Economy

As the winter season approaches, chances are that you are thinking of how to make your home ready for the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. At Heating Economy, we believe that it’s never too early to start taking into consideration the numerous repairs needed to keep your home warm and comfortable.

Careful planning and preparation will surely keep your home appliances and components working effectively and efficiently during the cold season and, in the end, save you time, money, and unnecessary frustrations. Listed below are some of the three major repairs that will make your home ready for winter:

1. Seal the Windows and Doors

Look for possible draughty cracks around the window frames, door frames, and electrical outlets and seal them up properly. The first thing you need to do is caulk the cracks. The best caulk to use is the silicone caulk because it does not shrink and is impervious to the elements. It is also readily available, cheap, and very easy to apply.

After applying the caulk, apply weather-stripping between the window frame and sash to eliminate air leakage. Tension seal and magnetic types of weather-stripping are very suitable for double-hung windows because they are very effective and durable. Self-adhesive V-strip weather-stripping is suitable for casement and sliding windows.

2. Clear Out the Gutters

Clogged gutters are not only unsightly, but also block the drainage of rain and melting snow, which may lead to household leaks and damage to everything from your guttering to your roofing. So, as the trees shed their last leaves during the autumn, grab a ladder, rubber gloves, and a rubbish bag and start clearing out the gutters.

Make sure you get rid of everything, from small leaves and twigs to caked-on dirt. Check whether the downpipes are clear of any form of obstruction and then run water through the entire system to ensure that it is unclogged.
